Paver Walkway Installation
Flexible By Design, Locked In By the Base
Flexible By Design, Locked In By the Base
A paver walkway gives you more design flexibility than poured concrete, and individual pavers can be lifted and reset if the ground underneath shifts, which isn’t an option with a continuous poured surface. The tradeoff is that a paver walkway depends entirely on the base underneath it. Skip the base work and pavers will shift, sink, and spread apart within a season or two.
We install paver walkways across Prince William and Fauquier counties, using brick, concrete, or natural stone pavers set on a properly compacted base with edge restraints that keep the whole system locked in place.
01
Excavation and Base Preparation
We excavate to a depth that accounts for the paver thickness, a bedding layer of sand, and a compacted base of crushed stone underneath, typically 4 to 6 inches total depending on the walkway’s use. A paver walkway that sees regular foot traffic needs a more substantial base than a lightly used garden path.
We compact the base in layers, checking the grade continuously so water sheds off the finished walkway instead of pooling on it.
02
Edge Restraints and Bedding Sand
Edge restraints, rigid plastic or metal edging anchored into the base, are what keep pavers from spreading apart over time as the ground around them settles and shifts with the seasons. Without them, even a well built paver walkway will slowly widen its joints and lose its tight, locked in look within a few years.
A thin, screeded layer of bedding sand goes down next, leveled precisely so every paver sits flush with its neighbors.
03
Paver Installation and Joint Sand
We set pavers by hand in the chosen pattern, checking alignment and level as we go, then compact the finished surface with a plate compactor that also settles polymeric joint sand into the gaps between pavers. That joint sand locks the pavers together and resists weeds and ant activity better than loose sand alone.
Paver Walkway Questions
What Northern Virginia Homeowners Ask
How Long Does Paver Walkway Installation Take?
A standard residential paver walkway typically takes two to four days depending on length, width, and the complexity of the chosen pattern.
Why Do Paver Walkways Shift or Spread Apart Over Time?
Usually because edge restraints were skipped or installed poorly, or because the base underneath wasn’t compacted deeply enough for the walkway’s actual use. A properly built system with edge restraints and a solid base should hold its shape for decades.
Can Individual Pavers Be Replaced If One Cracks?
Yes, which is one of the real advantages of a paver walkway over poured concrete. A cracked or stained paver can be lifted and swapped without disturbing the rest of the walkway.
What's the Difference Between Brick, Concrete, and Natural Stone Pavers?
Concrete pavers cost the least and come in the widest range of colors and shapes. Brick pavers offer a classic look with a higher price point. Natural stone pavers, including flagstone, cost the most but give a unique, irregular appearance that manufactured pavers can’t replicate.
Do Paver Walkways Need Regular Maintenance?
Occasional joint sand topping and weed control keep a paver walkway looking its best, but the maintenance burden is generally lower than people expect, especially with polymeric sand locking the joints in place.
