The Strongest Option When Block Isn’t Enough
The Strongest Option When Block Isn’t Enough
Poured concrete is the strongest option when a wall needs to hold back significant soil, support a structure above it, or handle a load that a segmental block system wasn’t designed for. It costs more than block retaining walls, but for taller walls, foundation applications, or walls carrying real structural weight, concrete is often the only material that makes sense.
We pour concrete walls across Prince William and Fauquier counties for both residential and site work applications, formed and poured to the specifications the job actually requires.
01
Forming and Reinforcement
Before any concrete gets poured, we build forms to the wall’s exact dimensions and install steel reinforcement, rebar placed according to the wall’s height and the load it needs to carry. Reinforcement is what keeps a concrete wall from cracking under the pressure of the soil or structure it’s supporting.
Taller or load bearing walls need an engineered reinforcement schedule, which we coordinate before forming begins.
02
Footing and Base Preparation
A concrete wall is only as strong as the footing underneath it. We excavate to the required depth, often below the frost line to prevent heaving, and pour a footing sized to the wall’s height and the soil conditions on site.
Skipping or undersizing the footing is one of the most common causes of concrete wall failure, and it’s not something that can be fixed after the wall is poured.
03
Pouring, Finishing and Waterproofing
Concrete is poured in a continuous pour where possible to avoid cold joints, which are weak points that can crack or leak over time. Once cured, we finish the exposed face and apply waterproofing or a drainage board where the wall is retaining soil, which keeps moisture from working through the concrete over the years.
Control joints get planned into the wall during forming, giving any shrinkage cracking a planned place to happen instead of cracking randomly across the face.
Concrete Wall Questions
What Northern Virginia Property Owners Ask
Is a Poured Concrete Wall Stronger Than a Block Retaining Wall?
Yes, generally. A properly reinforced poured concrete wall handles higher loads and taller heights than a standard segmental block system, which is why it’s the common choice for walls supporting structures or holding back significant soil.
How Thick Does a Concrete Retaining Wall Need to Be?
Thickness depends on the wall’s height and what it’s retaining. A short garden wall might only need 6 to 8 inches, while a taller wall supporting a structure needs a thicker pour and engineered reinforcement. We size every wall to its specific load.
How Long Does a Poured Concrete Wall Take to Cure?
Concrete reaches enough strength to remove forms within a few days, but full cure strength takes closer to 28 days. We plan backfill and any load on the wall around that curing timeline.
Can You Waterproof a Concrete Retaining Wall?
Yes. We apply waterproofing membrane or a drainage board to the soil side of any concrete wall retaining earth, which keeps moisture from working through the concrete over time and causing efflorescence or deterioration.
Do Concrete Walls Need a Permit in Northern Virginia?
Usually, especially for taller walls or walls supporting a structure. We check local requirements for your specific jurisdiction and handle engineering and permitting as part of the project where needed.
Our Process
How A PaveMasters Concrete Wall Project Runs
01
Design and Engineering
We size the wall’s thickness and reinforcement to its actual height and load.
02
Footing and Forming
We excavate, pour the footing, and build forms to exact dimensions.
03
Pour and Finish
Concrete is poured, cured, and finished with waterproofing where needed.
04
Backfill and Walkthrough
We backfill once cure strength allows and walk you through the finished wall.

Serving Nokesville, Bristow, Manassas, Gainesville, Warrenton, Centreville, and More in Northern Virginia
We pour concrete walls throughout Nokesville, Bristow, Manassas, Gainesville, Warrenton, and Centreville.

Bristow, VA. Bristow’s newer construction occasionally calls for concrete foundation or basement walls as part of additions and renovations.
Manassas, VA. Manassas includes older homes where concrete walls need repair or extension as part of renovation projects.
Gainesville, VA. Gainesville’s hillier terrain means taller walls are more common, which often pushes the choice toward poured concrete over block.
Warrenton, VA. Warrenton’s rural acreage sometimes needs concrete walls for agricultural or site work applications beyond typical residential landscaping.
Centreville, VA. Centreville’s established neighborhoods include a mix of older concrete walls that need evaluation for repair, replacement, or extension.
